According to a study by the Wildlife Institute of India\ (WII) the water in the holy Ganges is not in not in good health. The two head steams that form the Ganga River, at Devprayag, are the Aleksandra, coming from the Alkapuri glacier, and the Bhagirathi coming from Gurumukhi. The study done by WII has brought to light that the good bacteria, in both the headstreams of the Ganges was low. The good bacteria which is largely responsible for maintaining the purity of the water, in the Ganges, is Batriaphos. The parameters on which the study by WII was based were Ephemeroptera, Plecopteran and Trichopteran more commonly known as EPT. The water quality is considered to be good if the EPT index is 20%, and in case it is 30% then water quality is considered to be very good. In the study by WII, the EPT index was found to be below 15% at many places, in the river. There are many reasons that could be attributed to the decline in good bacteria, in the river. One of the reasons is dumping of debris from the development works along the river. The other is that dirty water from habitations along the river, flows into the river untreated.
